Alexander Technique
Barbara Bradby (ISATT)
Alexander Technique sees itself as an education, rather than a therapy.
As my first teacher used to say,
‘Removing pain is just a side-effect. It is so much more.’
Alexander Technique grew out of voice and performance training, and is often taught in acting, dance, and music schools. But many people come to it looking for a solution to problems of pain, often physical, but also mental or emotional. My own problem was lower-back pain, and I had tried many different therapies and exercises over the years. But after two weeks of the Alexander Technique, I was amazed to find my pain was more or less gone.
I was also curious - I just wanted to find out how this worked; and gradually, to begin to understand the ‘so much more’ that my teacher had talked about. I kept up lessons, and the day after I retired from my job, I started on the 3-year training course in Galway. I qualified as a teacher of Alexander Technique in 2018, and am a registered member of the Irish professional association, ISATT.
Alexander Technique is not magic. It works through teaching us how to reconnect our body with our mind. This means overcoming our tendency to treat our body as a series of parts that are somehow separate from our selves, particularly when, as we often say, ‘they hurt us’. It also means learning to use our minds in unaccustomed ways in everyday movements, instead of following our habitual patterns of walking, sitting, or standing.
In finding a new balance, we have to let go of the old one.
As a teacher, my job is to support you in letting go of unhelpful patterns, but also to explain clearly how the new, integrated movements work, and how you can consciously use your self to bring about positive change.
Lessons at the Gatelodge are £50 for one hour,
